Mark Antony and the Exile of Cicero : An attempt to Reconstruct the Political Strategy of the Young Antony and His Possible Involvement in Cicero’s Exile
Original language description
In his Second Philippic, Cicero depicted the young Mark Antony as a morally corrupt man who had tried to take revenge on Cicero for the death of his stepfather Publius Cornelius Lentulus Sura. Cicero implied that Mark Antony had supported the tribune Publius Clodius Pulcher in the initiative that led to Cicero’s exile and the burning of his house. The present article analyses Cicero’s rhetorical strategy, as well as Mark Antony’s relations with certain contemporary figures; in this way, I attempt to interpret Mark Antony’s political strategy during the period. At the same time, my analysis shows that it is unlikely Mark Antony participated in the events leading to Cicero’s exile.
