Opportunities and pitfalls of cross-national research on children and new media
Original language description
This chapter addresses some of the key theoretical and methodological questions related to cross-national comparative research, focusing particularly on the research field of (new) media and communication technologies. Following their presentation and critical reflection in the first part of the paper, these methodological considerations are applied to the topic of children's online behaviour and online risks and opportunities, taking the research conducted within the EU Kids Online project (Working Group 3, Deliverable D3.2) as a concrete empirical example. Discussing strengths and weaknesses of this approach, the authors seek to provide a clear logic for making methodological decisions required in conducting cross-national comparisons, and a possiblea model for the crucial stage of comparative analysis that can systematize and maximise the benefits of cross-national research.
