What makes a good therapist
Original language description
In the last two decades there has been a shift towards a competency-based model of psychotherapist training which emphasizes competencies on the side of a trainee (output) rather than time spent in training (input). This shift takes place in parallel with recent advancements in research. Empirical evidence shows that the person of the therapist really matters: differences among therapists exceed those among psychotherapy approaches. Research on what actually makes a good therapist is, however, fragmented and not easy to summarize. Nevetheless, the time is ripe for bringing these diverse resources together to outline some tentative conclusions for psychotherapy practice and training and set agenda for future research.
