Career adaptability of vocational upper-secondary school graduates during the school-to-work transition. Career adaptability and social support : The role of parents, teachers, and friends

  • Original language description

The associations between parental support, parental action, teacher support, and friend support and the four components of career adaptability (concern, control, curiosity, confidence) among 1,874 graduating vocational upper-secondary school students were examined. As expected, social support provided by significant others have positive impact on career adaptability, however, different sources of social support contribute differently to various career adaptability components. In concern and confidence, a significant role of parental, teacher, and friend support has been identified. Control has been associated with parental support together with friend support, and curiosity solely with the social support provided by close friends. Moreover, parental action compared to parental support did not show any significant link to career adaptability components. Results indicates that social support provided by significant others is essential for advancing career adaptability, and thus, for career development of adolescents.
