Acidophilic bacteria in oxidation of elemental sulfur

  • Original language description

Oxidation of elemental sulfur by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans was characterized by kinetic and physiological parameters. The bacterial cell attachment on the sulfur surface corresponded to the Langmuir isotherm at the beginning of sulfur oxidation. A violet-colored metabolite from the cultures was isolated and partially characterized. The proposed chemical structure indicated its possible role in cell adsorption onto elemental sulfur during the cell growth. Sulfur limitation and oxidation activity offree cells were fundamental to explain data of sulfur biooxidation. The role of adsorbed bacteria in sulfur solubilization was discussed.
