Bromide affects transfer of iodine through mother's milk to rat sucklings
Original language description
In the present studies, we evaluated the impact of increased bromide levels in the organism of the mother on the extent of iodine transfer to the sucklings with the aid of radiotracer techniques. High bromide intake in the lactating rat dams caused a marked increase in iodine elimination through the kidneys, accompanied by a decrease in iodide accumulation in the mammary glands. One of the consequences of the observed decrease in the extent of iodine transfer through mother's milk to the young was a very pronounced decrease in the body weight of the pups.
