Pseudomonas aeruginosa lectins and recognition of host glycans : Structures and thermodynamics
Original language description
Pseudomonas aeruginosa galactose- and fucose-binding (PA-IL and PA-IIL) lectins contribute to the virulence of this pathogenic bacterium, which is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in cystic fibrosis patients [1]. The crystal structures of both lectins have been solved in complex with the corresponding monosaccharides [2,3]. Although the two lectins are different in sequence and structure, they display the unusual characteristics to bind carbohydrates through direct interaction via one or two calcium ions. The structures or PA-IIL with a series of different monosaccharides have now been solved and allow for rationalizing the basis of the unusual high specificity of this lectin for fucose, and of the broad range of monosaccharides that can be bound.
