Characterization of Panton-Valentine leukocidin positive Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated in the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

The Czech Reference Laboratory for Staphylococci has been paying attention to PVL positive S. aureus strains since 2004. By December 31, 2005, we found 50 (7.8 %) of 645 isolates, mainly from skin infections, to carry lukS PV-lukF PV genes. Most PVL positive strains were phage typeable and were predominantly classified into phage group II (53 %). Only 6 (12 %) S.aureus strains of 50 PVL positive isolates showed resistance to oxacillin, to erythromycin were resistant 25 (50 %) of strains. The six MRSA PVL positive isolates carrying type IV SCCmec cassette showed five distinct and unrelated SmaI macrorestriction patterns estimated by PFGE. As PVL production is associated with lysogenic conversion, attention was paid to prophage typing. The majority of strains were double or triple lysogenic. Most commonly detected prophages were those of families Sa2 and Sa3.
