    Positron annihilation at grain boundaries in metals

  • Original language description

    Positron annihilation at selected tilt and twist grain boundaries in iron and nickel is examined theoretically. First the atomic structure of studied perfect and imperfect grain boundaries is obtained using molecular dynamics simulations. Characteristicsof positrons trapped at such GBs are then calculated employing the atomic superposition method and are related to free volumes found at GBs. It is observed that in some cases vacancies introduced into ideal grain boundaries do not result in an increaseof the positron lifetime.

    V článku jsou teoreticky studovány vybrané sklonové a zkrutové hranice zrn v železe a v niklu. Atomová konfigurace studovaných dokonalých a nedokonalých hranic zrn je získána pomocí molekulární dynamiky. Charakteristiky pozitronů zachycených na těchto hranicích zrn jsou pak vypočteny pomocí tzv. atomic superposition method a jsou korelovány s velikostí volného objemu na hranicích zrn. V některých případech vakance zavedené na ideální hranici zrn nevedou ke vzrůstu doby života pozitronů.
