LIQUID SODIUM AS A COOLING MEDIUM: DETERMINATION OF CARBON CONTENT
Original language description
This work is focused on a study of interaction of liquid sodium with CO2 by means of laser ablation with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (LAICPOES). Liquid sodium is examined as a cooling medium for the GENERATION IV of nuclear reactors. Carbon dioxide should displace water or water vapor in the Energy Conversion Systems of NPPs with Sodium-cooled Fast Reactors. For purpose of the carbon dioxide molten sodium interactions study an apparatus was designed in which sodium melting occurs under CO2 atmosphere. Molten sodium is expected to interact with CO2 in several ways that might comprise chemical reactions, absorption and/or dissolution. To find an extent of these interactions, a method for determination of carbon in sodium is being developed. After cooling down, sodium is transferred into an ablation cell and a specimen material is released by focused laser beam ablation.
