Inhibition of gap-junctional intercellular communication and activation of MAPKs by cyanobacterial extracts
Original language description
Cyanobacteria produce various biologically active compounds which might represent a cancer risk. We investigated effects of various cyanobacterial extracts and pure cyanotoxin microcystin-LR on inhibition of gap-junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) along with activations of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) in normal rat liver stem-like WB-F344 cell line. Pure microcystin did not inhibit GJIC or activate MAPKs, but complex extracts of water blooms significantly inhibited GJIC and activated MAPK, independent from the content of microcystin. The most pronounced effects were systematically observed in extracts of the cultures of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae as well as in complex water bloom extract dominated by the same species, which does not produce microcystin. Microcystis sp. culture or water bloom had significant but less pronounced effects on both GJIC inhibition and MAPK activation.
