Original language description
Piezoelectric quartz crystals are used as resonator-based transducers for construction of biosensors and direct real-time monitoring of affinity interactions. The resonant frequency is proportional to surface mass changes, thus providing quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). The active measuring system consists of an oscillating circuit and frequency counter; resistance (dumping) of the resonator is often followed in order to provide information on the accompanying viscoelastic changes. The piezoelectric immunosensors are most common; other affinity sensors employ lectins, aptamers and biomimetic systems as recognition elements. Evaluation of hybridization allows detecting specific sequences of nucleic acids associated with microbial agents and genetic disorders. The selected examples focused on environmental and food analysis will demonstrate the usefulness of piezoelectric sensors.
