Academic Writing Skills: Diploma Thesis Summaries
Original language description
This paper reports some tentative findings of a preliminary analysis of a small corpus of diploma thesis summaries written by students of the English department of the Faculty of Education of the Masaryk University in Brno. The analysis focuses particularly on the structure of summaries and the tense, voice and person markers used in the texts. The findings indicate that though the texts display some features of the English academic writing style, the use of lexicogrammatical features for signalling indiscourse shows some inconsistencies.
