How to achieve and maintain coherence in spoken English
Original language description
While viewing coherence as a result of an ongoing process of negotiation of meaning between all participants in a spoken interaction, the author investigates some interactive discourse items and their role in achieving and maintaining coherence in spokenEnglish. Any spoken text can be considered coherent if it is understood to be coherent by participants in the given communicative situation. The presence of cohesive means neither condition, nor guarantee text coherence. Nevertheless, the interactive D-items analysed enhance the achievement and maintenance of coherence owing to the pragmatic functions they perform in spoken discourse.
