The chapter outlines the results of research focused on academic writing skills and the content and design of academic writing courses at university level. It is based on a survey carried out in bachelor and master programmes at the English department ofFaculty of Education, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic. The survey explored the students' previous experience of academic writing and previous tuition as well as their needs and and development of writing skills at university level. The resultsshow that Czech university students mostly have previous experience in general writing but not in academic writing, which they mostly become acquianted with at university only. Therefore, they need systematic tuition with focus on the specificities of academic writing such as style, argument presentation and development, quotation styles, plagiarism, etc. Such systematic tuition should be provided both in specialized academic writing courses as well as incorporated in various other unive
