Deaf learners reading in English as a foreign language: Investigating the possibilities of development
Original language description
The paper presents partial results from a study dealing with reading skills development of deaf learners within the instruction of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). The research interconnects reading achievement of deaf as a long recognized challengeof deaf education with a topical issue of teaching foreign languages to the deaf. The aim is to study the reading process of deaf EFL learners when reading in English and investigate the impact of an explicit reading strategy instruction on the process as well as on learners' attitudes to reading. The research assumes a qualitative approach with multiple case studies of prelingually deaf university EFL learners. The findings obtained during a pilot study as well as the main research to date indicate great individual differences between learners. They seem to be in agreement with existing research of successful deaf readers.
