Basic motor competencies
Original language description
Motor competence (MC) development is an essential aim of physical education (PE) (Herrmann, 2015), and is recognized as the ABC of physical activity and sport (Stodden et al., 2008). For example, children with limited development in MC (e.g. running, catching objects) are likely to have more difficulties in complex motor skills (e.g. running with obstacles and opponents, use objects to manipulate other objects). Quality PE is argued as a critical determinant of MC development for it provides an inclusive, qualified and significant opportunity for all children. As such, valid and adequate assessment strategies to detect MC development should be a concern of PE teachers. On the basis of the question “which competencies a child should exhibit at a certain age to be able to participate in PE as well as in sport and exercise culture?”, the MOBAK test battery was developed to assess MC in primary PE (Herrman et al., 2015).
