Intercultural characteristics of European nations
Original language description
The articleis a review study written on the basis of current empirical knowledge about the content of cultures of European nations. Generally, it compares the cultural characteristics of European countries with respect to two main questions: to what extent is the culture of European countries homogeneous/heterogeneous and what development and shifts of national cultures can we expect in relation to globalization and European integration. The paper focuses mainly on the results of three best-known research studies of national cultures conducted at the country level: Hofstede s study, the GLOBE project, and Shalom Schwartz s study. The analysis of the currently available data led the author to the conclusion that present-day Europe is culturally highly heterogeneous and the results of the studies do not indicate that cultural differences among countries are disappearing.
