Millennium Development Goals and sub-Saharan Africa
Original language description
For a long time, the proportion of people living in the sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) in extreme poverty has been oscillating about 50 percent. In 2000, the UN Millennium Development Goals initiative (MDG's) was launched to help reduce this figure. One of thegoals of this UN project between 1990 and 2015 is to halve the proportion of people living below the 1$-a-day poverty line. In what follows, we would like to determine whether this goal is being met. The UN attributes the main reason of the SSA povertyto a low degree of savings and capital accumulation. The official development assistance (ODA) is then seen by the UN as a tool to reduce this poverty. We will put this development-aid logic to an empirical test.
