MicroRNAs and Gastric Cancer
Original language description
Gastric cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the world. Polymorphisms within miRNA genes have been described as new risk factors for atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer. A substantial number of miRNAs show differential expression in gastric cancer tissues. Genes coding for these miRNAs have been characterized as novel protooncogenes and tumor-suppressor genes based on findings that these miRNAs control malignant phenotypes of gastric cancer cells and the carcinogenic effect of Helicobacter pylori infection. Several investigations have also described the ability of specific miRNA expression profiles to predict prognosis, and potential of selected miRNAs as therapeutic targets in gastric cancer patients.
