    Fast sampling mode for MALDI TOF mass spectrometry imaging using scanning desorption laser beam

    Successful application of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI TOF) mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) at biomarker discovery, drug and metabolites distribution analysis and neural network studies provided this technique with aninfluential position among imaging techniques. Using label-free approach, MSI is able to detect and localize a wide range of ionizable substances in biological tissues. A disadvantage of this technique is speed of the analysis. Since the very beginning,a single acquisition of a high-resolution MS image could take even days. Recent commercial mass spectrometers employing high-repetition rate solid-state desorption lasers significantly improved MALDI MSI throughput, but the analysis time is still in theorder of hours. Here we introduce a novel sampling approach taking advantage of incorporation of a high-speed precision scanning mirror redirecting the desorption laser beam across the imaged sample area.
