Italian Stucco of theTelč Chateau - Material Characteristics and Its Technological Reconstruction
Original language description
The stucco in the Telč Chateau belongs to the treasures of figural stucco plaster work of Italian masters of the second half of the 16th century. In the vaulting of the wing linking the main courtyard and the garden, there is a niche with polychrome stucco of Adam and Eve, and stucco relief of Neptune (Pluto?) on the quadriga is located on the south facade of the old palace. The most important plaster work is in the All Saints Chapel. This interdisciplinary study focuses primarily on the two last-mentioned examples. The stucco works were studied in broad contexts of historical and building development, cultural milieu of the Central Europe and from the art-craft execution point of view. Furthermore, the Neptune/Pluto stucco relief became a subject of conservation/restoration survey and, later on, of conservation/ restoration intervention, carried out in 2014. A detailed material analysis focused on the characterisation of the stucco plasters composition was performed in order to supplement the information. In the material research, microscopic techniques were employed - optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with additional EDS analysis. X-Ray diffraction of the binder was carried out in order to identify the phase composition. The quantitative phase analysis was performed using the method of internal standard according to Rietveld. The authors of the contribution focus on the characterisation and development of selected stucco art and art-craft works created during the Renaissance period in Telč Chateau, the discussion regarding their authorship included.
