The Man of Comenius' Labyrinth
Original language description
Chapter "Comenius' Man of the Labyrinth" discusses Comenius' concept of humanity. He shows that his theological-philosophic assumptions cannot be reduced to mere pedagogical-didactic efforts. For Comenius humanity is based in the Christian concept of history, and out of that comes his timeless urgency. Existence is pictured by Comenius as a labyrinth in which a person has to look for the truth of things. In this respect Christianity represents a whole, from which one cannot separate out Comenius' concept of education. Education for humanity as restoring God's image in human beings appears as an integral theme of remedy for human affairs. According to Comenius, education towards humanity usually exceeds the instrumentalizing activities of everyday lifeand aims at the question of self-knowledge and the identity of a person in the world.
