The chapter deals with the beginning, development and contemporary situation of the study of religions as an academic discipline in the former Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic. It describes and critically analyses the process of institutional organization of the discipline, theoretical issues, main figures, works and theoretical, methodological and ideological approaches, including especially positivist and Marx-Leninist critique of religion. The treatise includes a variety of disciplines, from Philosophy of religion to Oriental studies.The chapter also addresses the contribution of theologians, especially when dealing with non Christian traditions.
