The chapter deals with the beginning, development and contemporary situation of the study of religions as an academic discipline in Ukraine. It describes and critically analyses the process of institutional organization of the discipline, theoretical issues, main figures, works and theoretical, methodological and ideological approaches, including especially positivist and Marx-Leninist critique of religion in the time of USSR. The treatise includes a variety of disciplines and reflects their characteristic approach to phenomena called religion. The chapter also addresses the contribution and activities of the main centre of academic of religion in National academy of sciences in Kyiv.
