The chapter focuses on the origin, development and the current situation of the Study of Religions as a discipline in Russia particularly in the 19th and 20th century when the discipline underwent a rapid development in entire Europe. It analyzes variousmethodological approaches, main research interests and the periods' issues. A critical attention is paid to ideological influences determining the interpretation of religion in particular stages of the development. The author analyses main works of those academicians, who contributed greatly to the development of the discipline, to discussions of important research problems, also foundation of periodicals, solution of important research projects, organization of international projects. Because the interdisciplinary dimension is essential for the Study of Religions, the chapter also inquiries into the contributions of related disciplines for its development, such as Oriental Studies, Sociology of Religion, Psychology of Religion, Philos
