Clarifying Climate Emotions via Their Foci

  • Original language description

Authors clarify climate emotions by way of investigating in what sense they relate to the climate crisis, i.e., what makes them climate emotions. In their chapter, they develop a method for emotion clarification – foci analysis (based on Bennett Helm’s notion of the “focus” of an emotion) – which they apply to selected climate emotions: fear, anxiety, and hope. A significant part of their chapter consists of carefully analysing these climate emotions, characterising them, revealing their relations, and identifying their most common subtypes. Through the elaborated foci analysis and further argumentation, they demonstrate that they are climate emotions through their foci: they are emotions whose foci are conceived as significantly affected by the climate crisis.
