Clarifying Climate Emotions via Their Foci
Original language description
Climate emotions are quite consensually understood as “affective phenomena which are significantly related to the climate crisis”, but the crucial question – in which way they are related – still requires clarification. In our chapter, we approach the question of how emotions are related to the climate crisis (i.e. what makes them climate emotions) by concentrating on their various foci. This approach is based on Bennett Helm’s argument that emotions cannot be understood adequately without recognising their focus. Helm distinguishes between (1) the target of emotion (its concrete object); (2) the formal object (its implicit evaluation); and (3) its focus (an object having import that is related to the concrete object in such a way that makes its formal object intelligible).
