The care of the soul
Original language description
In Plato, care ethics takes the specific form of the care for the soul (epimeleia tês psuchês, therapeia tên psuchên), a topic that is central throughout his dialogues. Anchored in the Delphic inscription ‘know yourself’, the topic is a leitmotif throughout the Platonic corpus: in the Alciabiades, where Socrates exhorts Alcibiades to take care of his soul as a prerequisite for political office; in the Republic, where we are advised to care for our soul in preparation for the most important choice of our life, that is, that of our next life; in the Laws, where we learn that the care for the soul is integral to a virtuous life. This emphasis on the soul makes Plato a special interlocutor for care ethics. Whereas contemporary reflections on care ethics often start with the specific needs of social groups identified as either caregivers or care receivers, the Platonic perspective introduces a spiritual dimension, shifting the emphasis from specific social conditions to considerations about our human nature. How can Plato’s understanding of care ethics as care for the soul contribute to today’s discussion about care ethics?
