Original language description
Material research deals with real specimens or with computer models. In all cases, similar tools can be used to create abstract models and to investigate the influence of various factors. This paper explains several simple and effective tools, such as dimensional analysis and theory of similarity, statistical methods, determination of the number of measurements or tests necessary for the determination of confidence limits or for verification of a hypothesis, the use of correlation and autocorrelation among the data, and finding of regression functions and check of their suitability.

Czech description
Materiálový výzkum pracuje s reálnými vzorky nebo s počítačovými modely. Ve všech případech lze užívat podobné nástroje pro tvorbu abstraktních modelů a pro vyšetřování vlivu různých faktorů. Příspěvek vysvětluje někoklik jednoduchých a účinných nástrojů, jako je rozměrová analýza a teorie podobnosti, statistické metody, stanovení počtu experimentů nutných pro docílení určitých konfidenčních mezí nebo pro ověření hypotézy, použití korelace a autokorelace v datech, a nalezení regresních funkcí a ověřeníjejich vhodnosti.
