The internal erosion process at the Mostiste embankment dam

  • Original language description

The Mostiste Dam on the River Oslava is rockfill dam with a relatively thin inclined impervious core.Completed in 1960,the dam is the oldest compacted rockfill dam in the Czech republic (CZ),and is some 29 m high and 292 m long. Internal erosion of the dam core material resulted in increased leakagesthrough the dam core and consequent subsidence of the dam crest, which was observed by the end of the year 2004.As a component of emergency activities,a dam break model was set up using internal erosion and embankment dam breaching simulation techniques. This paper sets out the results of analyses concerning the progress of damage, surveys and reasons for the emergency situation at Mostiste. The analysis of internal erosion symptoms is described together withthe algorithm and results of the dam break model.
