Measuring longitudinal wave speed in aluminum bar
Original language description
In this article there is described a method for measuring longitudinal wave speed in aluminum bar using ordinary computer with a microphone attached. Axial impact on one end of a bar created standing wave whose sound was detected by microphone. Softwarerecorded signal and calculated spectrum using FFT routine, found position of highest peak and displayed a graph for manual measurement of peak width for error estimation. The bar was balancing on tip of needle supporting the bar at its midpoint. That iswhy only odd harmonics were found in the spectrum. The velocity of sound together with known density of the material can be used for calculating Young s modulus of tension. Both mechanical properties, speed of sound and Young s modulus have been found very close to correct value
