Investigations on shear bond characteristics of grid reinforced asphalt concrete

  • Original language description

Reinforcing asphalt concrete pavements by 2D interlayers inserted in between of newly constructed layers (grids, composites, nonwoven fabrics) has been widely used since 80s. Since then, benefit of crack mitigation has been documented by many researchers worldwide and varies between improvement (reduction of reflective cracking). Generally the geosynthetic reinforcement compare to unreinforced increases the fracture energy by about 2–14 times as reinforcement absorbs excess energy. Still major concern in the pavement technical community is, to which extent the insertion of reinforcement components may affect the shear bonding of the asphalt concrete layers. In the paper different type of reinforcing grids has been tested in form of glassfibre grids and glassfibre composite grids with different type of emulsions in various application rates. The results of shear bond have been analysed in the laboratory and in the field. Clear corelation has been found in laboratory testing and field also with respect
