The strain gauge module for measurement on railway superstructure

  • Original language description

The created functional sample represents the interface for strain gauge measurements. The module is designed primarily for the needs of the Sbox datalogger (FV2023_1) and measurements on railway infrastructure. However, the module is designed to be used with a wide range of other devices. The module allows strain measurements in either quarter bridge, half bridge or full bridge connections. It connects to a datalogger or measurement control panel via a Canon 9 pin connector. The supply voltage is 3.3 V. Parameter switching is realized by DIP switches. The device is built in a waterproof box with IP65 protection.

The amplification of the module is switchable with an additional offset setting. The offset is adjusted by a trimmer located inside the box. The gain can be set to three gain values: 10x; 100x; 1000x. The bandwidth setting is also adjusted via a DIP switch and can be set to 200 Hz and 1 kHz or more. The module allows switching between 120Ω and 350Ω bridge. Parameter switching is done via DIP switches. The strain gauges are connected to the module via a built-in terminal block. The device is built in a waterproof box with IP65 protection.

  • Economical parameters

The created module is designed especially for measurements on the railway superstructure using the SBox datalogger. The knowledge of deformation phenomena occurring on the superstructure will allow to detect important characteristics during the loading of the railway grating. The module can also be used for measurements with other measuring stations with simple adaptation. At present, the economic benefits cannot be fully evaluated. On the other hand, the functional model provides a cheap and sufficiently accurate solution and therefore the possibility to implement the sensing of deformation phenomena cheaply and easily at a very affordable price. And the quantities describing the dynamic loads can be used for other types of analyses and measurements. The module can also be effectively used, for example, in the creation of devices providing information on the speed of passing trains, or their relatively easy identification. Primary use of the module is envisaged for long-term, research-type measurements on su
