    The contribution briefly compiles current knowledge concerning the modelling of toughening mechanisms in brittle matrix composites (ceramic, glass, polymer matrix etc). Such models are highly required since they allow efficient interpolation between experimental results as the constituents and the composite architecture are varied while empirical methods are prohibitively expensive. In conclusion some experimental data are compared with theoretical predictions.
