On some crack problems in cross-ply ceramic composites

  • Original language description

A micro-mechanical study of the matrix cracking of fibres-reinforced ceramic composites under tensile stressing normal to fibres is presented. Stability and/or in-stability of the straight micro-crack paths is investigated for a periodic array of originally collinear, slowly growing mi-crocracks with fibres located in between the neighbouring micro-cracks tips. The problem is solved using the technique of distributed dislocations and an approxi-mate fundamental solution for a single edge dislocation lyiing in a general point between inclusion centres. Applications to periodic microcrack tunnelling and micro-cracks weakening ahead of the main crack are discussed.
