Behaviour of EHL Films under Lateral Vibrations
Original language description
Any machine components, including roller bearings, gears, cams and followers, do not operate under ideal steady-state conditions. Elastohydrodynamic lubricating (EHL) films, separating surfaces of these elements, are affected by vibrations and by variation of operating parameters (speed, load, surface curvature) over time. Previous findings of other authors have shown that the exposure of EHL contacts to transient conditions can cause a film failure but on the other hand it can also improve a lubrication performance according to the particular conditions. In the present article the film thickness behaviour under a lateral harmonic motion is investigated. A colorimetric interferometry method was used to evaluate the film thickness distribution in pointcontact observed by high-speed camera. The EHL contact was formed between a transparent flat disc and a steel ball. It was subjected to rolling motion simultaneously with sliding harmonic motion of ball in a transverse direction to the ma
