Numerical Calculation of Mechanical Losses of the Piston Ring Pack of Internal Combustion Engines
Original language description
Piston rings of reciprocating internal combustion engines play an important role in the ability of car manufacturers to meet the strict limitations for exhaust gas emissions. Therefore, their research and development is just as important as any other component of an engine. This work is intended to present a fast simulation model of the piston ring pack for the determination of the influence of various design parameters on friction losses. The created specialized software tool is suitable mainly for carrying out parameter studies which could aid the design process of the piston ring pack. To demonstrate the power of the created simulation model, it has been applied to a conventional spark ignition three-cylinder passenger car engine, where the influence of design parameter changes of the first and second ring on the overall friction loss has been numerically evaluated.
