ACTIVE DIAGNOSIS OF TOROIDAL BEARINGS USING ACOUSTIC EMISSION TECHNIQUE
Original language description
In this paper we study the results of testing toroidal bearings using the parameters extracted from Acoustic Emission testing. The aim is to find the characteristics of the Rolling Contact Fatigue (RCF) in these special bearings during testing. We concentrate on the period before pitting. We think that by studying this period intensively, we are able to specify the pattern of the signal which will distinguish the initiation of pitting. And it will enable us later to better understand the behavior of the specimen during the last stages of the test, and then come up with a way to predict the pitting before it happens. The experiment takes place in a specially designed stand for this type of bearings to obtain the best results from acoustic emission sensors. Toroidal bearings are characterized by their special design, which can combine the self-aligning capability with the axial displacement ability, and that makes their applications very versatile and important. This study is an initial step towards other more advanced steps to better understand the crack and pitting mechanisms in the specially important toroidal bearings.
