Cylinder deactivation of internal-combustion engines: historical development, state-of-the-art and outlook
Original language description
Due to strict emission limits, the automotive industry needs to look for ways to reduce CO2 emissions. One of the ways is to increase the efficiency of internal combustion engines by technologies like cylinder deactivation. Cylinder deactivation is a fuel consumption reduction technology. This paper summarises the history of cylinder deactivation and describes various approaches to the implementation of this technology, including its potential and constraints. The synergy of cylinder deactivation with other technologies is also presented and future possibilities are predicted.
