The ITU-T standard is based upon the use of E.164 addresses (similar to telephone numbers) for public ATM (BISDN) networks. The ATM Forum extended ATM addressing to include private networks. It decided upon the subnetwork or overlay model of addressing,in which the ATM layer is responsible for mapping network-layer addresses to ATM addresses. This subnetwork model is an alternative to using network-layer protocol addresses.
