Analysis of the Common-Mode Radiation from Differential Signalling on Printed Circuit Boards
Original language description
An investigation of common mode EMI of differential signalling is presented. Based on results for the single trace, closed-form expressions for the differential pair in proximity to a reference plane are developed and numerically validated. It is found that when the traces are placed near the edge of the reference plane or beyond, the inductive coupling becomes comparable to the common-mode inductance of conventional single trace routing, even for perfectly balanced currents. In the case of small currennt asymmetries the common-mode attenuation is almost destroyed. The developed expressions provide a quantification of common-mode EMI issues of differential signalling.
