Compact High-efficiency Li-Ion Fast-charger
Original language description
The increasing demand for electrical energy calls for better efficiency of systems – less waste heat. This contribution shows possibilities of increasing the efficiency of switching power supplies, with demonstration on a battery charger. In switching power supplies, a forward converter is the preferred topology over a few hundred Watts. This topology uses two main magnetic components, a transformer and an output inductor. A flyback converter, on the other hand, uses only one magnetic component – the transformer – potentially allowing for a higher efficiency, smaller size and reduced costs. However, because of some drawbacks, it was usually not advantageous to use the flyback converter for high powers. This contribution shows how a high-efficiency (>93 %) flyback converter based battery charger, built using modern components and with unconventional supplementary circuits, can be realized with great success for a high power output of 600 W (60 V, 10 A) using just a single Silicon Carbide MOSFET switch.
