IN-SITU X-RAY STUDY OF LEAD SULFATION IN SULFURIC ACID ENVIROMENT
Original language description
Process of sulfate formation on a metal lead foil with a preferred orientation was studied by an X-ray diffractometer. All measurement were performed in a special in-situ X-ray electrochemical cell based on an ECC-opto-std cell by El-CELL that was re-designed and thus modified to the strong acidic environment. Formation of lead sulfate at open circuit voltage and then the changes during electrode cycling using cyclic voltammetry were monitored. Moreover x-ray spectra in charged state when lead sulfate crystals are reversibly changed to lead were obtained and evaluated. Experiments tried to reveal connection between preferred structure orientation of lead and the product of lead oxidation - lead sulfates. Indeed, the crystals in formed lead sulfate layer exhibit also the preferred orientation that could have an origin in the preferred orientation of the substrate. Powder XRD device seems to be a useful tool for lead sulfate structure investigation and measurement of their evolution.
