Faulted Zone Identification in Power Distribution Networks Using Synchrophasor Measurements

  • Original language description

Advancements in control and monitoring technologies within electric power networks have given rise to various techniques for fault location in electric systems. The increasing deployment of phasor measurement units (PMUs) in power systems as highly responsive measuring devices, enabling real-time monitoring, has the potential to improve the fault location processes. This, in turn, can enhance the quality of the power supply, which is considerably influenced by both sustained and temporary fault occurrences. This study proposes a technique to identify the faulted zone in a well-monitored and completely observable distribution network equipped with optimally placed PMUs. The distribution system under consideration is the modified IEEE 14-bus test system, and the optimal placement of PMUs is achieved using the Integer Programming Procedure method.
