Study of the Passive Layer and Corrosion Resistance of Stainless Steels
Original language description
The objective of this study is to compare the composition of the passive layer (made by natural or chemical passivation) on stainless steel AISI 304L. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) with ion etching was used. First, scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive analyser(EDS) was used to verify the chemical composition of stainless steel and metallographic structure characterization was done. With DLD Ultra AXIS X-ray photoelectron spectrometerelemental composition of the passive layerwas determined as a function of sputtering time. The quality of the two observed passive layers was evaluated on the basis of recorded contents of chromium in oxidized and in metal form. The measurementswere conducted in 3 locations (1 - area of weld, 2- heat-affected zone, 3 - the area of the base material). Furthermore, tests according to standard CSN EN ISO 9227 were performed in neutral salt spray for up to 1000 hours. According to standard CSN 03 8171 stainless steel samples were
