Our group has been studying alginate production in alginate over-producing strains of Pseudomonas fluorescens using several complementing approaches; analyses of growth and alginate production in knock-out mutants, transcriptome analyses and quantification of alginate biosynthetic complexes by transmission electron microscopy. The aim of these studies has been to define limiting factors for alginate biosynthesis in order to be able to design strains that are better suited for industrial alginate production.
