Corrosion Protection of Metallic Archaeological Artefacts Using Parylene Based Removable Barrier Coating

  • Original language description

Using of barrier films may be an alternative way of conservation of metallic archaeological objects. Polymer parylene (poly-p-xylylene) was chosen for preparation of thin films for this purpose. The soluble interlayer made from lacquer Laksil was applied between metal and parylene film to ensure removability of barrier coating. The presented article dealt with deposition of parylene/Laksil multilayer on model metallic samples and real iron artefact. Standard corrosion tests were performed in to assess the effectiveness of anticorrosion protection which is much better in case of parylene/Laksil multilayer in comparison to conventional conservation coatings made from Paraloid B72 and microcrystalline wax. EDX and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed almost one hundred per cent successful removal of protective multilayer. SEM of coated real artefact cut showed coverage without defects on this rugged surface. Finally, UV stability of prepared multilayer was studied using UV-VIS and FTIR spectroscopy.
