Determination of macrolide antibiotics in three different wastewater treatment plants
Original language description
Antibiotics are drugs used in human and veterinary practice to treat diseases caused by microorganisms and they may also serve as growth promoters for livestock in veterinary medicine. After administration, the drugs are excreted from the body in the form of inactive metabolites or unchanged via urine or feces. These substances are then discharged into the wastewater and in most cases enter the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Antibiotics can negatively affect biological processes of treatment, where microorganisms are essential for a proper functioning wastewater treatment plant. As has already been reported many times, the efficiency of antibiotics removal is not sufficient, thus WWTPs are considered as major point sources of environmental contamination by these compounds. Wastewater from three different types of WWTPs was tested on the content of four macrolides: azithromycin, clarithromycin, erythromycin and roxithromycin. The analytical method combined solid phase extraction followed by a chr
