Improvement of lipid compound prooduction by red yeasts though random mutagenesis
Original language description
Lipid compounds are useful for human nutrition, pharmaceutical and biofuel applications and represent products of high value. As a very promising microbial lipid producers are considered so called red yeasts. Red yeasts are characteristic with their pink to red coloration which is caused by lipid pigments (carotenoids) production. Random mutagenesis can affect production rate of metabolite and more efficient substrate utilization. This study is focused on the effect of ultraviolet irradiation to lipid and carotenoid production by red yeasts strains. The main target was to employ random mutagenesis induced by ultraviolet irradiation to gain lipid overproducing mutants capable of utilizing economically feasible substrates such as glycerol or whey. For this experiment were used yeasts of genus Rhodotorula.
